So you're a writer? Welcome!
You’ve finished your book, or at least made a good start on the story. Congratulations on getting those ideas out of your head and onto the page or the screen. If you’re reading this, you’re probably considering using the services of an editor. But, as a writer, you’re already comfortable with words and confident in your story, so you might be asking yourself…
What can an editor do for me?
It’s worth remembering that every bestselling author has used
an editor. A glance through the acknowledgments section of many books will
highlight the author’s appreciation of their editor, or even an editorial team.
An author immersed in their own work can see what they
expect to see, reading over the typos, the missed punctuation, or the misplaced
word. Captivated by their own characters’ relationships, an author may miss the
point where a section of dialogue has gone from being pacey and intriguing to
over-extended and potentially repetitive. Caught up in the intricacies of their
plot, the author may miss those moments of discontinuity, or where they have confused
rather than entertained a reader.
An editor brings both a reader’s detachment and an
experienced eye that can help polish your story to a shine.
An editor can help you take a step back to see the wood as
well as the trees.
And, in keeping with Faulkner’s advice that “In writing, you
must kill your darlings,” an editor can show you which darlings to cull!
